Nice Airport is the third french airport in terms of passengers traffic, after Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle and Paris Orly. The fourth and fifth place are occupated by Lyon and Marseille airports.
It was built on an area of land partially reclaimed from the sea, in the extension of the Promenade des Anglais, along the Var in the Arenad district. Its unique location guarantuees passengers a spectacular landing along the Côte d'Azur coastline, with breathtaking views on islands, bays, beaches, snow capped mountains in winter, and the metropolitan area, which offers a fairytale image at night. The landing ends with a very low flight over the sea before finally touching down.
The airport takes first place in PrivateFly 2014 awards, being singled out for the most beautiful airport approach in the world from among over 200 competing destinations.

The airport was built on its present site as early as 1930 by private individuals, and in 1937 became a state airport, managed by the Secrétariat de l'Air.
